On this day in 2021, insurrectionists — incited by hate and misinformation from the highest levels — stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to prevent a peaceful transfer of power.

Today, we mourn the brave Americans who died in defense of our democracy and express our heartfelt gratitude to the courageous Capitol Police officers who defended the Capitol on that terrible day and work tirelessly every day to keep us safe.

I’ll forever be inspired that on the evening of January 6th, even in the face of an insurrection, Congress reconvened. We came together on the House floor to perform our sacred duty to the nation by certifying the election results. One year later, it’s clear that we still have a lot of work to do to heal, rebuild, and prevent further attacks on our democracy — including attacks on our fundamental right to vote. It won’t be easy, but I truly believe our democracy will prevail — if we fight for it.

I’ll never stand down in the fight for our democracy, for the American people, and for our free and fair elections.
