Fair Courts Act

Yesterday, I introduced the Fair Courts Act to restore justice and impartiality to our courts. This bill does two very important things: 1. It limits anyone pursuing legal action from picking the judge that hears their case in hopes of swaying the outcome in their favor. 2. It requires that any case that would have a national impact have a panel of judges preside over the case, not just one, so all sides are taken into account. Right now, our country’s still reeling from the most recent judge shopping case – a single partisan judge and his dangerous, reckless, and

National Women’s Health Week

This week is National Women’s Health Week. As we’re fighting to keep abortion legal in our state and across the country, this week couldn’t come at a better time. For far too long women have suffered because health care wasn’t made for us in mind, and we’re often forced to advocate for ourselves to our doctors. For as long as it takes to secure abortion access and care in our state and country, I will continue advocating and fighting for our rights. This fight won’t be over until abortion care is safe and legal.

America’s Children Act

This week, I reintroduced the America’s Children Act in Congress. It’s critical legislation that provides a pathway to permanent residency for documented Dreamers. North Carolina, like every state in our country, has flourished because of hard-working immigrants, and we’re better off for it. Our kids are our future, and I’m determined to make sure that these young people have the resources they need to succeed—including a way to permanent residency.

Carolina Abortion Fund

I have an important update on the NC 12-abortion ban: The bill passed the House and Senate and is on @RoyCoopernc’s desk right now. The good news is that Gov. Cooper has already vetoed it to protect our right to choose. The bad news is that we expect the legislature to override his veto. Like you, I am devastated and angry. But I will not let that keep me from fighting for our rights. The GOP has continued to ignore the American people on this issue, but we cannot stand silent. We will force them to hear us, and next

Yesterday, I voted against House Republicans and for America.

Instead of working with us, the GOP has passed dangerous unnecessary legislation that would expedite child deportation, restart construction of the pointless border wall, and do nothing to keep families together—this does not reflect our values. Our country has a long history of immigrants contributing to America for the better, and Republicans have forgotten this. Here’s my message to my colleagues: It’s well past time to stop pushing xenophobic policies and work with us to create a humane and functional immigration system that works for everyone.
