National Gun Violence Awareness Day

Movie theaters. Schools. Places of worship. Super markets. Sporting events. Concerts. Restaurants. Public transit.  No one should ever visit these places worried about being a victim in the next mass shooting. But, that is the reality of today’s America.  Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and my heart breaks for every person who knows the pain of losing a loved one to senseless gun violence.  Our country is in the middle of a gun violence epidemic, a preventable crisis. As Wake County continues to grow there is an urgent need for transportation infrastructure and transit system improvements. If Wake County receives these funds they would enhance safety and accessibility in our communities and be a catalyst for job creation.

Comprehensive Debt Collection Improvement Act

Earlier this month, a bipartisan amendment of mine passed the House as part of H.R. 2547, the Comprehensive Debt Collection Improvement Act.  This legislation gives protections for small businesses, servicemembers, students, and other consumers against mistreatment and harassment by certain debt collectors. My amendment asks for more investigation into the communications by debt collectors and how Congress can stop debt collectors from flooding consumers and homeowners with constant calls, texts, and emails.

George Floyd

Today marks one year since George Floyd’s life was taken at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. In the weeks and months that followed, millions of Americans took to the streets in one of the largest movements in American history to protest and demand justice.  The fight for justice and truth should never be stopped or silenced. In March, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act passed the House and I proudly co-sponsored and voted for it. The bill is now in the hands of the Senate. Passing this bill would be a first step in reforming our police
