Yesterday was a dark day for our nation. The dangerous events at the United States Capitol, incited by hate and misinformation from the highest levels, were heartbreaking and wrong. They have no place in our political discourse.

This was an unprecedented attack on our democracy. I strongly condemn yesterday’s violence and call on all elected leaders to do the same.

American voters made their voices heard loud and clear and elected Joe Biden as the next President of the United States in a lawful election. The peaceful transition of power is a core tenet of our democracy and one that we, the people, have always respected.

Despite everything that transpired, Congress came back and did its job to protect our democracy. We fulfilled our constitutional duty to certify the results of the Electoral College—a responsibility that I took very seriously.

I was proud to stand up for our democracy, for the American people, and for our free and fair elections.

We have a lot more work to do to heal and rebuild, and prevent further violence in the coming days and weeks. My staff and I are focused on our work to move North Carolina’s 2nd District and our country forward.

It’s time to recommit to healing our divisions and continuing our fight for justice, equality, and progress.
